  • Epson Home Cinema 5020UBe Projector Review
The Home Cinema 5020UB falls in the middle of Epson’s 2012 projector line, in between the entry-level Home Cinema 3020 and the premium Pro Cinema 6020UB (which is only available through custom channels). The 5020 actually comes in two forms: the basic 5020UB and the wireless 5020UBe, which costs about $300 more. The 5020UBe has an integrated WirelessHD receiver, and the package includes a WirelessHD transmitter to which you can attach up to five HDMI sources and transmit the video signal wirelessly to the projector. This is a great perk that not only omits the need to run a potentially long HDMI cable from your gear rack to the projector’s location, but also allows you to connect more HDMI sources than you otherwise could. In all other respects, the 5020UB and 5020UBe are identical.

    5020UBe Features
This 1080p 3LCD projector has a rated brightness of 2,400 ANSI lumens and a rated dynamic contrast ratio of 320,000:1. The 5020UBe is an active 3D projector with a built-in 3D emitter; two pairs of rechargeable 3D glasses are included in the package. The glasses communicate with the 3D transmitter via RF instead of IR, which removes the need for line-of-sight and should make for a more reliable connection. Epson’s Bright 3D Drive technology is designed to boost light output with 3D sources to produce a brighter 3D image.

Epson has included very generous lens-shifting capability (+/–96.3 percent vertical, +/–47.1 percent horizontal), as well as a 2.1x zoom. These features make it easier to precisely position the projector on your screen. Inputs include dual HDMI, component video, VGA, and composite video. Split-screen viewing allows you to view two sources simultaneously. RS-232 and a 12-volt trigger are available. The Home Cinema 5020UBe uses a 230-watt E-TORL UHE lamp with a rated lamp life of 4,000 hours (5,000 hours in the dimmer Eco mode).

The 5020UBe’s setup menu has a solid assortment of advanced controls, including an adjustable-speed iris, high/low lamp modes, Super Resolution to help improve apparent detail, RGB offset and gain controls to precisely calibrate white balance, advanced gamma, skin-tone adjustment, and an advanced color management system to adjust the hue, saturation, and brightness of all six color points. 3D depth and brightness controls are available, as is 2D-to-3D conversion. This projector lacks an anamorphic picture mode that allows you to view 2.35:1 movies with no black bars, when mated with an add-on anamorphic lens. The 5020UBe includes 10 memory settings to store different picture configurations.

Compare the Epson Home Cinema 5020UBe
The Home Cinema 5020UBe is about $1,000 more expensive than the entry-level 3020e, and it’s aimed at the movie lover who desires a higher level of performance than we normally see in the budget category. The 5020 has a much higher dynamic contrast ratio than the 3020 (which is rated at 40,000:1), and it adds THX certification. Reviewers from HomeTheaterReview.com, Projector Central, and CNET give the 5020UBe high marks for its black-level performance (UB stands for Epson’s UltraBlack technology), especially compared with entry-level offerings like the 3020. This model can’t quite compete with more expensive projectors like the Sony VPL-HW50ES and JVC DLA-X35 when it comes to black level and advanced calibration, but it’s still an above-average theater-room performer. The 5020UBe can also produce a very bright image, which gives it a nice level of versatility for someone who also enjoys casual viewing in a room with some ambient light. The 5020UBe adds a Frame Interpolation mode that helps to improve motion resolution and reduce judder in film sources, and its generous lens shifting and zoom also distinguish it from many entry-level models.

One of the main competitors to the Epson Home Cinema 5020UBe is the Panasonic PT-AE8000U, which offers similar specs and setup features for a similar price. The PT-AE8000U does not include the WirelessHD feature that you get with the 5020UBe; if you opt instead for the 5020UB without WirelessHD, then the Epson is the better value between the two. To see how these two projectors compare in a direct head-to-head evaluation, check out Projector Central’s Shoot Out. Other competitors include the BenQ W7000 and the Mitsubishi HC7800D.

    Epson 5020UBe Review Summary
All in all, the Home Cinema 5020UBe offers a level of flexibility in both setup and performance that makes it a highly compelling option in the sub-$5,000 projector market. If you’re trying to build a high-performance theater on a budget and need a projector that can accommodate different lighting conditions, the 5020UBe (or non-wireless 5020UB) projector is worth a serious look.
