  • Epson Home Cinema 3020e Projector Review
The Home Cinema 3020 is the entry-level offering in Epson’s 2012 projector line and is available in two forms: the basic 3020 and the wireless 3020e, which costs about $300 more. The 3020e has a built-in WirelessHD receiver, and the package includes a WirelessHD transmitter; you can attach up to five HDMI sources to this and transmit the video signal wirelessly to the projector. This is a great perk that not only omits the need to run a potentially long HDMI cable from your gear rack to the projector’s location, but also allows you to connect more HDMI sources than you otherwise could. In all other respects, the 3020 and 3020e are identical.

    3020e Features
The 3020e is a 3LCD projector with a 1080p resolution. It has a rated brightness of 2,300 ANSI lumens and a rated contrast ratio of 40,000:1. The 3020e is an active 3D projector with a built-in 3D emitter; two pairs of rechargeable 3D glasses are included in the package. The glasses communicate with the 3D transmitter via RF instead of IR, which removes the need for line-of-sight and should make for a more reliable connection. A pair of 10-watt speakers is built into the projector cabinet, so you don’t have to mate the 3020e with an external sound system, as you do with most projectors.

Compared with Epson’s more expensive projectors, this model has a more limited complement of setup tools to assist with image placement on the screen. The 3020e offers a manual zoom of 1.6x (higher-priced models have a zoom spec over 2x), but there’s no horizontal or vertical lens shifting to help you more precisely position the image. The 3020e does have adjustable feet and keystone correction that allows you to correct the distorted shape that occurs when you position the projector too high, too low, or too far off to the side of the screen. However, the use of keystone correction can sacrifice image resolution. The 3020e uses a 230-watt E-TORL UHE lamp with a rated lamp life of 4,000 hours (5,000 hours in the dimmer Eco mode).

Inputs include dual HDMI, component video, VGA, and composite video. Split-screen viewing allows you to view two sources simultaneously. A USB port is available to connect a USB drive and display photos and, because the projector has internal speakers, it also has a pair of stereo analog audio inputs. RS-232 is available, but you do not get a 12-volt trigger input. The WirelessHD transmitter box, in addition to sporting five HDMI inputs, has an optical digital audio input and an HDMI output to pass the signal through to a secondary display.

In terms of picture controls, the 3020e offers a healthy number of options for a lower-priced projector, including an automatic iris to improve dynamic contrast ratio, high/low lamp modes to adjust the projector’s light output, Super Resolution to help improve apparent detail, RGB offset and gain controls to precisely calibrate white balance, advanced gamma, skin tone adjustment, and an advanced color management system to adjust the hue, saturation, and brightness of all six color points. 3D depth and brightness controls are available, as is 2D-to-3D conversion. This projector has four aspect ratio options (Normal, Full, Zoom, and Wide) but lacks an anamorphic picture mode that would allow you to view 2.35:1 movies with no black bars when mated with an add-on anamorphic lens.

    Epson Home Cinema 3020e Comparison
The Home Cinema 3020e projector is about $1,000 less expensive than the step-up Home Cinema 5020UBe. The 3020e lacks the UltraBlack technology found in the 5020Ube, which allows for better black-level performance, and it has a slightly lower brightness rating (the 5020UBe is listed at 2,400 ANSI lumens). The result is a much lower dynamic contrast ratio (40,000:1 versus 320,000:1 for the 5020UBe). Also, the 3020e lacks the 5020UBe’s Frame Interpolation mode that helps to improve motion resolution and reduce judder in film sources. Consequently, the 3020e may not be the best choice for the more discerning cinemaphile who wants the best picture quality for HD movies and TV shows in a traditional light-controlled theater room. However, the 3020e is a good choice for the more casual movie lover who wants to enjoy the big-screen experience, including 3D, on a budget. That 2,300-ANSI-lumen brightness rating is still a lot of light output, which gives the 3020e a nice level of versatility for someone who also wants to watch content in a room with some ambient light. The inclusion of the built-in speakers gives the projector the flexibility to replace a TV or to use in a temporary setup, such as for an outdoor movie night. You can check out some reviews of the 3020e over at HomeTheaterReview.com, Projector Central, and PCMag. One of the main competitors to the Epson Home Cinema 3020e is the BenQ W7000, which uses DLP technology but has similar brightness/contrast ratio specs for a similar price. The BenQ W7000 has a 1.5x zoom but adds horizontal/vertical lens shifting, a frame interpolation mode, and an anamorphic aspect ratio. The W7000 does not include the built-in speakers and the WirelessHD module. If you were to purchase the non-wireless Home Cinema 3020 model for $300 less, it would be the better overall value. Other competitors include the lower-priced Optoma HD33 and the Panasonic PT-AR100U.

    Epson 3020e Review Summary
All in all, the Epson 3020e is a good choice for the shopper who wants to step up – in both features and performance – from the basic entry-level projector but may not demand the higher-level performance and better calibration/setup options that you can get when you move above the $2,000 price point.
